Erwinna is a Community in Bucks County, Pennsylvania.
It is named after Colonel Arthur Erwin (also "Irwin"), who was a leader in the Bucks County Militia. A concise biography of him has been created by the DAR Chapter bearing his name. Colonel Erwin is said to have supplied many of boats that were used by George Washington and the Continental Army to cross the Delaware on the night of December 25, 1776, en route to the Battle of Trenton the following morning. As River Road in Upper Bucks County winds its way through the beautiful country lying next to the Delaware River, it passes the tiny settlement of Erwinna. There can be seen the Erwin Family burying ground, the resting place of the family for whom the town is named. o in March of 1769, Arthur Erwin bought 944 acres in Tinicum Township, the site of the town of Erwinna. He was to buy a lot more land in later years and by 1780 was the largest landowner in the entire township. Tinicum Township remained just beyond civilization limits as Europeans settled on farmland in lower parts of Bucks County early in the 18th century. Inhabited by Native Americans, the land was not appealing to Europeans. Tinicum was slowly settled by the English, Scotch-Irish, and Germans until early in the 20th century, when Eastern Europeans arrived, followed by artists and writers seeking refuge from city life. The hilly, rocky, and sometimes swampy topography that discouraged early settlement has continued to limit development of the rural areas between the six villages and hamlets of the township, so that early folks returning today would recognize the landscape and many of the homesteads they established here. Through vintage photographs, Tinicum Township, Bucks County celebrates the area's rich history.
